How Were Throwing Axes Used in the Past?

Axe throwing as a sport is becoming highly popular all over the world. The modern trends have even made it a necessary element in the bars. Many bars used to have Bowling as a sporty element, but bowling is now replaced with axe throwing. If you are unfamiliar with this fascinating practice, this is similar to knife throwing. It involves a competition in which the competitors throw an axe on a specified target. The goal is to hit the bulls eye target as close as possible. This sport is played regularly in the American States, UK and Canada where the game is played on different commercial locations, such as bars. In addition, there are annual competitions held along with opportunities at different events and festivals. 

The Modern Axe Throwing

Axe Throwing was not a sport since its early days. However, it slowly transformed into a regular practice. In the modern days, there are high quality throwing axes that are used for this wonderful sport. These axes are now mostly used for sport nowadays. However, many use them for combats and self defense as well. However, not the frequently used self defense tool. 

Since the 21st century, many sportsmen have adopted axe throwing sport as a profession. There are many axe throwing sports leagues arranged around the world with The World Axe Throwing as the greatest one. It is a worldwide governing body of axe throwing and organizes major tournaments. Another global organization is National Axe Throwing Federation which determines the rules of axe throwing. Hence, the main use of throwing axes revolves around the specific sport. 

The Past Uses of Throwing Axes

One of the fascinating subjects of history include the use of throwing axes. They were popular both as weapons and tools because of cheapness of their build. They are among the oldest tools that men used. During the stone age, they were frequently used. The cutting edge was initially manufactured using stone and did not include a handle. However, they were transformed into weapons very quickly, but they weren’t used until 500 AD. The most popular type of throwing axe used in the past was the Francisca Axe. It was used as a weapon during the Middle Age. For French and Germans, it was a national weapon. 

Many historians determine that these axes were not used in the battles. It was considered a foolish act to throw a pricey weapon to the enemies and end up losing it and becoming unarmed. Instead, it was considered useful as a hunting tool. It was harder to get closer to wild animals, therefore, such throwing weapons were used for hunting them from a safe distance. 

Several historians believe that the axes were thrown during hand to hand combats. They offered a psychological advantage to their efforts in the wars. In the late Middle Ages, the iron-made throwing axes were pretty commonly used by the knights and soldiers. The Europeans brought these axes to the new world and provided the Native Americans the new style of axes named Tomahawk axes. Since they were designed in a way to provide some advantage during the combats, the earlier uses of these axes revolved around combats and wars. 

Other than the modern uses of throwing axe, they were never popular as a sport like they are now. Perhaps, before the late twentieth century, no one had ever thought of getting involved in a competition where the axes were supposed to be hit at a specified target. Hence, the major difference between the modern and traditional use of throwing axe is the sport. The modern axes are used for sport and the older axes were used for combats.
